New Zealand finally reopens its borders for WHPs

After two years of pandemic during which New Zealand's borders remained closed to all foreign travellers, the entry conditions are starting to be relaxed.

As of 14 March 2022, applications for WHPs are open again: you can therefore fill out an application for a Working Holiday Visa and travel to the country as soon as it is accepted!

As a reminder, you will need to have several documents with you when you arrive:

  • Your passport, valid for at least 15 months;
  • Your electronic visa, as well as a printed copy;
  • The Traveller Declaration, to be filled in and printed;
  • Proof of savings: you must have at least NZD 4,200 (€ 2,634);
  • Health insurance to cover your expenses for the duration of your WHP in New Zealand.

Please note that you will need to be vaccinated against Covid-19 to enter New Zealand, i.e. you must have received at least two shots of vaccine. The last shot must be given at least 14 days before departure, and a negative PCR test less than 48 hours old must be presented before boarding at the airport.

On arrival, no quarantine is required, but you will receive two self-tests: the first to be carried out within 24 hours, and the second after 5 days. In case of a positive test, you will have to go to an approved centre or to a general practitioner.

WHP Australia: new advantageous conditions for WHP participants

Unlike New Zealand, Australia has reopened its borders to WHP participants earlier: visa applications have been allowed since 15 December 2021.

However, you will also need to be vaccinated against Covid-19, show a negative PCR test and complete the Digital Passenger Declaration. Proof of international health insurance to cover your expenses in Australia, and proof that you have at least AUD 5,000 (€ 3,425) in savings will be required.

As far as health measures are concerned, Australia requires its visitors to have a complete vaccination schedule, except in exceptional cases: the provisions are changing rapidly, particularly in terms of the definition of the required "vaccination schedule": remember to check before you leave by consulting the official website!

In order to boost the country's attractiveness, the government has taken a few additional measures concerning WHPs. Firstly, if you arrive in the country before 19 April 2022, you will be able to request a refund of your visa fees.

Another piece of good news is that, if you have not been able to go on a WHP in Australia due to the pandemic in the last two years, you can reapply for a new visa for free!

In addition, until the end of 2022, it will be possible to work for the same employer without time limits: previously, a 6-month limit per employer was applied.

Preparing your WHP in Australia or New Zealand

Going abroad for a WHP is an exciting adventure, but it does require a bit of organisation! So here are three tips to make sure everything goes smoothly once you get there:

  • Plan the first two weeks of your trip: book accommodation and plan your itinerary in advance to have peace of mind when you arrive;
  • Take out appropriate international health insurance: because of the Covid-19 epidemic, taking out WHP health insurance that covers your medical expenses is essential, and even compulsory to enter many countries! In case of illness or accident, you can be taken care of, hospitalised or repatriated if necessary.
  • Plan to save a lot of money: if you do not find work immediately, you will have to support yourself by your own means.
