Texte d'introduction

With one of the lowest unemployment rates in the world and a dollar that is higher than the euro, Australia is an Eldorado for aspiring Working Holiday Programme (WHP) participants. However, going Down Under with your backpack and your best smile is not always enough to land a job. Here are 5 tips for finding a job during your WHP in Australia.

Writing an Australian resume

And in English, please! You will also have to present your diplomas as equivalents. Indeed, your high school degree will not mean anything to an Australian employer. It should be replaced by Year 12. The same goes for "Diploma in" and "Bachelor of" if you have a Bachelor's or Master's degree.

Then, depending on the job you want to do, you will have to be more or less inspired. If, for small jobs, your resume can fit on one page, finding a job in Australia with more responsibilities requires a resume of up to 3-4 pages if necessary.

You can easily find examples of resumes online.

Choose a small job to start with

The Australian work culture is very important to an employer. This is why they will always favour an Australian candidate or one with local experience.

This is why many people who come to Australia on a temporary basis take on odd jobs such as fruit picking, waitressing, selling goods, working in youth hostels, etc. As such, you can already consult the different online job boards before your departure.

If you plan to stay longer than 6 months and get a more qualified job, think about having your diploma recognised if needed. Some skilled sectors are in short supply. Do not hesitate to consult the Skilled Occupation List.

Anticipate the training required for certain jobs

Do you want to work in a bar or restaurant? You must have the RSA "Responsible Service of Alcohol".

Are you planning to work on construction sites? Without your White Card, you will not be hired.

Finally, the RGS "Responsible Gambling Service" allows you to work in gambling establishments such as casinos.

Most of these courses can be taken online and cost between AUD 40 and 160 (about €27 and €110).

Apply online

Whenever you get the chance, introduce yourself directly to employers. With your resume and smile, try your luck, preferably in the morning. This could lead to a trial or even a job!

Of course, this doesn't work if the job is hundreds or even thousands of miles away. Which brings us to the next tip...

Don't hesitate to move

Australia is one of the most popular destinations for people on work experience. You will therefore be far from being the only one looking for a job.

If the cities of the south-east are the most dynamic (Sydney, Melbourne, Canberra) to find a job, you should not hesitate to go and have a look at the west coast, in Perth for example, or even in the Australian bush! You will find many opportunities for agricultural work, including the famous fruit picking.
